You plug in a USB stick that definitely has your files on it — and it opens empty, or everything has turned into shortcuts, or Windows demands you format it. In most cases the files are still physically on the stick; what’s broken is the index Windows uses to find them. This guide explains what’s happened, what free software can and can’t get back, and the warning signs that mean you should stop and use a professional service instead.

What to do right now (the 60-second answer)
- Don’t format, even if Windows offers to. Click Cancel.
- Don’t save anything to the stick — anything written now can overwrite your missing files.
- Try another USB port and, if you can, another computer. If the files appear elsewhere, the problem is the first computer, not the stick.
- Check the stick’s properties (right-click → Properties). Used space with no visible files is a good sign — the data is still there.
- Only ever use read-only recovery software — and check what it can actually recover first (see below). If the stick doesn’t show up at all or reports 0MB, skip straight to the lab section.

Why a USB stick shows empty when it isn’t
Corrupted filing table. USB sticks use a simple index (FAT32 or exFAT) to track where files live. Pull the stick out mid-write, or lose power at the wrong moment, and the index gets scrambled — Windows then sees an empty or unreadable (‘RAW’) drive even though the files underneath are intact.
Hidden files and the ‘shortcut virus’. A common infection hides your folders and replaces them with shortcuts. The stick looks empty (or full of shortcuts), but your data is sitting there with its ‘hidden’ flag set.
Wear and electronic faults. Flash memory has a finite life. An ageing stick can start dropping its filing system, showing files one day and nothing the next — usually the prelude to failing outright.
Counterfeit capacity. Fake sticks lie about their size. Files written beyond the real capacity loop back and overwrite earlier data — files ‘disappear’ because they were never safely stored.
What our free software can and can’t recover from a stick
Data Clinic Memory Card Recovery is free, digitally signed and strictly read-only, so a scan can’t make anything worse. But it was built for memory cards, and what it can bring back from a USB stick depends on what went wrong:
- Files deleted by mistake, stick otherwise healthy. A Quick Scan reads the stick’s file table and recovers deleted files it still lists — any file type, with the original name and folder.
- Stick shows empty, RAW, asks to be formatted, or has been formatted. That means the file table is damaged or gone, which needs a Deep Scan — and deep scan only recognises 17 formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF and HEIC photos; Canon CR2/CR3, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW and Adobe DNG raw files; MP4, MOV and AVI video; MP3 and WAV audio; and PDF and Word (.docx) documents. Files come back without their names. Spreadsheets, presentations, ZIP archives, older .doc files and everything else won’t be found.
So if the stick held only photos, videos, music, PDFs or Word documents, it’s worth a scan: select the stick in the device list (match the size), run the scan, preview what it finds, and recover to your computer — never back to the stick. What NOT to do
- Don’t format when prompted. The prompt appears precisely because your filing system is damaged — formatting replaces it and buries your files deeper.
- Don’t run chkdsk /f yet. Repair tools rewrite the filing system; on corrupted sticks they can orphan or fragment the very files you want. Recover first, repair after.
- Don’t click mystery shortcuts on an infected stick — that’s how the infection spreads to the next computer.
- Don’t keep a failing stick plugged in re-trying it for hours. Each power-up of failing electronics is a risk.
- Don’t open the casing. If the connector is bent or the board is damaged, that’s soldering-iron-and-microscope territory.
When it’s a job for the lab
Software can only reach data on a stick the computer can read. If the stick is undetected, shows 0MB, gets hot, has a snapped connector, went through the wash, or errors on every read — the fault is in the hardware. My USB stick shows files as shortcuts — where are the real files?
That’s the classic sign of a ‘shortcut virus’ picked up from an infected computer: it hides your folders and replaces them with shortcut links. Your files are usually still on the stick, hidden. Scan the stick with antivirus on a clean machine, then recover the files with read-only recovery software — and don’t click the shortcuts, which is what spreads the infection.
Windows says the stick is empty but the properties show space is used. Why?
Used space with no visible files means the files are hidden or the filing table is damaged — the data itself is still occupying the space. Recovery software reads the stick underneath the filing system and can often bring files back — though our own free tool only recognises 17 photo, video, audio, PDF and Word formats in that situation, so for other file types use our lab service.
Windows says ‘You need to format the disk before you can use it’. Should I?
No — not before your files are recovered. That message means Windows can’t read the stick’s filing system (it often shows as RAW). Formatting replaces the filing system and makes recovery harder. Scan it with read-only software first; format only once your files are safe.
Should I run chkdsk to fix the stick?
Not while your files matter. Chkdsk repairs the filing system by rewriting it, and on a badly corrupted stick it can strip filenames or convert your files into fragments. Recover first with a read-only tool, repair afterwards.
The stick isn’t detected at all — will software help?
No. If nothing appears in Windows (or it appears as 0MB), the stick’s electronics or memory controller have failed and no software can reach the data. That needs chip-level recovery in a lab. Can a cheap or fake USB stick cause this?
Yes. Counterfeit sticks report a bigger capacity than the memory they contain; once you write past the real capacity, new files overwrite old ones or vanish. Recovery is sometimes partial, and the stick should never be trusted again.
