Data Clinic’s Step-by-Step Phone Recovery Process (Levels 1, 2 & 3)
When your phone is no longer functioning, won’t charge, or has been damaged, it is not always evident what level of recovery is required. Data Clinic uses a three-stage recovery process to help keep costs low for simpler recoveries but also maximise the chances of recovery for more seriously damaged phones. We can recover your photos, contacts, messages, some notes, text messages and other valuable data.
Level 1 Phone Recovery – Peripheral Component Failure
Level 1 recoveries work on the larger, peripheral components of your phone like the screen, charging port, battery, and buttons.
- Suitable for: phones with broken screens, damaged charging ports, or broken cases.
- Approximately 60% of phones we work on are recovered successfully at Level 1.
- Your data is recovered on to a memory stick
- You will not get back a working phone
Level 2 Phone Recovery – Internal Component & Chip Repairs
If Level 1 fixes fail, this means that there is a fault or multiple faults on the logic board, sometimes referred to as the motherboard. So, we proceed to Level 2 which involves complex board-level work on integrated chips and power rails
- Level 2 is often required for phones that are liquid damaged, burnt, run over, or bent severely.
- We use manufacturers schematics to identify where there are electronic shorts or chip failures
- Level 2 costs are payable on success only
- Your data will be returned to you on a memory stick
- You will not get back a working phone
Level 3 Phone Recovery – CPU Swap
Sometimes the logic board is so damaged that not all the faults can be located and rectified. Level 3 involves a CPU swap, sometimes referred to as a ‘chip off’, where the critical chips are extracted from your phone’s damaged motherboard and implanted into a working logic board so we can then recover the data.
- Very technically sophisticated and labor-intensive process.
- Prices differ based on the model and brand of your phone.
- We will need to purchase a working logic board on your behalf
- The labour cost and and any parts costs are payable upfront
Things to Keep in Mind
- You can choose the best timescale for you, if you need your data urgently, we have an Emergency Service and work on your phone outside of lab hours to get your data back to you as quickly as possible. If you are happy to wait a few days, but still need your data quickly, we have Priority service, where we work on your phone continuously during lab hours which are 8am – 4pm. Or, if you are happy to wait, our Standard Service is the cheapest option.
- Your phone will be taken apart during the process of recovery.
- We will only return your broken/faulty phone if requested
- You do not have to progress to Level 3, we will not do any work without your authorisation
- Your recovered data will be returned on a memory stick.

Here is the process we use to recover the data from your phone explained in more depth.
1. Contact us either by calling 0800 151 2207 or using the ‘Get A Quote’ button above.
2. We will need your phone…
(a) We can collect it from any UK address for free, or
(b) You can post it to us, or
(c) You can drop it off at a Data Clinic location close to you
3. If the problem is straightforward and related to the screen, buttons, charging port or the battery, we will recover your data at Level 1 for £195 + parts + memory stick + VAT. The data will be recovered to a memory stick.
4. If the problem is more serious and not recoverable at Level 1 then you can proceed to our Level 2 processes to safely recover your data. The cost for the Level 2 recovery is an additional £195 + VAT but is payable only if we successfully recover your data.
5. We return everything back to you, a shipping fee may apply depending on which recovery service you choose. Due to tamperproof manufacturing techniques your phone will most likely be returned in a non working and dismantled state.
