The first addition is to our Hard Drive Failures page (http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/hard-disk-failures/). There’s now a link to an audio file of a hard drive that has mechanical failure. So you’ll be able to listen to it and if it sounds like your hard drive, then it may well have a mechanical fault.
Mechanical hard drive faults usually relate to the heads on a drive failing or to damage to the hard drive’s service area (an important part of the hard drive that is accessed at boot time).
