Data Recovery from Seagate hard disk drives

Common capacities: 80Gb, 100Gb, 120Gb, 160Gb, 200Gb, 250Gb, 300Gb, 400Gb, 500Gb, 750Gb (all PATA); 160Gb, 300Gb, 400Gb, 500Gb (all SATA)

Information: There are three common models of Seagate 3.5" hard disk:

  • Seagate Barracuda - Popular drives that use either IDE or SATA interfaces. These drives have been manufactured in large numbers and are widely used as they are fast, quiet (unlike their U series predecessors !) and offer huge storage potential.
  • Seagate U series - Various models were produced in each series, eg. U4, U5, U6 etc. These are older IDE drives that are easily recognisable by their black rubber sleeves. Note: These sleeves are removable and It's important not to loose or obscure the information on them as the information printed there is not duplicated anywhere else on this disk. Whilst a typical U series drive operates noisily, it's generally not a cause for concern.
  • Seagate Cheetah - Common high performance drives that use either a SCSI or Fibre Channel interface

General notes: Well thought-out and often made using good quality PCB & HDA components.

Data recovery: Although Seagate drives fail infrequently, when they do fail it's often with the following easily identifyable symptoms:

  • The drive will become noisy (frequently VERY noisy)
  • The drive will not be recognised in the BIOS.

The data on drives exhibiting these symtoms is often fully recoverable but it's important that the drive is powered down and not re-started as further use of the drive can make the data unrecoverable.

What if I have one of these drives but the symptoms are different?: This is quite possible, Seagate drives are still prone to all the other problems hard disks suffer from ie. mechanical failure, logical failure, bad sectors etc., just less often.

What should I do?: Call the Data Clinic and talk your problem through with us on 0870 140 2525, or fill out our auto-form and we'll call you back

Recovery possibilities: Data Clinic are often able to perform a full data recovery

The popular Seagate 'Barracuda' series of hard disks are cheap, reliable & offer huge storage potential

The older Seagate 'U' series of hard disks are easily identified by their black rubber sleeves. The 'U' series has been replaced by the 'Barracuda' series but are still quite common
