Data Recovery from Sun Solaris (Sun OS) systems
Definition: Solaris is a UNIX based operating environment developed by Sun Microsystems. Originally developed to run on Sun”s own SPARC architecture workstations, Solaris now runs on many workstations from other vendors, including Intel.
Data Loss on Sun Systems: Human error apart, loss of data is usually due to either a corruption of the filesystem or hard disk drive failure:
Data loss due to Corrupt Solaris UFS, VxFS and HTFS filesystems: We are able to recover data from the following instances of filesystem corruption:
- Super Block damage
- Inode corruption
- Damaged Partition information (including deleted, corrupt, repartitioned and missing partitions)
- Volume Table of Contents (VTOC) and OLT table
- Block Group Descriptor damage
- Unix Data recovery software provides recovery after errors in Cylinder group
- Damage caused to data structures by FSCK
Data Loss due to hard disk drive failure: The hard disks used in Sun systems are traditionally high performance (10,000 RPM) internal drives that use either SCSI or FibreChannel interfaces, they sometimes contain customized features specific to the Sun architecture they run on. Common failures include
- Data loss / corruption due to bad sectors
- Data loss / corruption due to electrical, mechanical or firmware failure of the hard disk drive device
What should I not do?: We recommend avoiding filesystem repair utilities such as FSCK as they can often cause recoverable data to become unrecoverable.
