The disk in drive <x> is not formatted

Information: This is a common Windows message that appears in a number of different circumstances -

• When an unformatted hard drive is connected to a PC
• When a drive with an unrecognised filesystem is plugged into a PC (eg. an external drive with a Mac file system is plugged into a Windows machine)
• When a Windows compatible hard drive has developed bad sectors over critical areas of the hard disk and the Windows machine can no longer read the data contained on the hard disk correctly

In the first two circumstances above there is not a problem with the hard disk.

However, when a drive has developed bad sectors the same Windows message will appear. In these circumstances it is important NOT to format the hard drive. As bad sectors can quickly spread across a hard disk it is important to switch the drive off and remove it from the system.

Recovering data: We are often able to successfully recover all the data from hard drives with this problem. Data Clinic have invested heavily in specific hardware that is able to manipulate these drives and successfully gain access to the data that is currently inaccessbile.
