Brief overview of the Hard Disk Doctor products from SalvationDATAThe Salvation HD Doctor Suite of products offer an unparalleled level of diagnostic and rectification capability. The products address one of the prime causes of HDD failure, that of defective Firmware. They offer full diagnostics scans of the firmware, allowing repair or replacement of individual firmware ‘modules’, module groups or complete firmware sets. The replacement can be achieved either from the comprehensive and ever growing firmware library, or from donor drives, with the drive parametric analysis offered by the products enabling correct compatibility matching to be maintained. Where diagnosis suggests either physical or logical defects have arisen within the platter ‘Service Area’ the products allow for scanning of the SA, repair of logical defects or relocation of the SA (‘SA ‘Shift’) to overcome physical defects. Where problems arise with HDD booting, initialisation or recognition, the HD Doctor can aid diagnosis of the cause and Boot Management Resources can also either be obtained from the library or transferred from donor drives. Faults arising from the HDD PCB can be diagnosed and resolved, with support for compatibility matching and the added facility of PCB ‘Hot Swapping’ being key functions. ROM content often plays a key part in HDD operation and the products offer the capability to diagnose and up/download the ROM content or to assist in physical ROM component replacement. Where Read/Write head faults are diagnosed, HD Doctor offers support for head replacement by: facilitating correct compatibility, allowing disablement of specific heads or HDD sections together with manipulation of LBA parameters necessary to maintain HDD function. Further diagnostic capability for mechanical/electrical faults is provided by the Power Management function which presents a real-time, graphical indication of a drives voltage and current data. As well as offering diagnosis and repair for the purposes of data recovery, HD Doctor products also support HDD repair techniques including self-repair or ’Selfscan’ functions, that allow drives to be restored to serviceability where data recovery is not required. In all of these aspects, support is offered that reflects
a broad experience of actual HDD faults and their successful resolution
and which is specifically referenced to the principle manufacturer’s
drives and their varying characteristics and fault histories. >>
The course includes all hardware, software, training materials and one
years support. Students who complete the course will become professionally
accredited, be able to fully diagnose, repair and restore data from
damaged Maxtor hard disk drives, and gain a training certificate. The
course is run throughout the year, for further details, please visit
the Computer Science Labs web site, or click
