The course is designed to provide detailed insight into Firmware analysis, rebuild and other Data Recovery and Drive Refurbishment operations on Maxtor HDDs.

Areas covered will include Maxtor HDD Model / Series / Family classifications, Numbering systems, internal technology and characteristics.

A comprehensive examination of Maxtor firmware, both resident on the PCB and platter Service Area and how it loads and initialises HDDs as well as how to set the HDD into ‘Safe’ mode.

An examination of the individual firmware modules, their functions, groupings and relative levels of criticality together with the navigation of available libraries of firmware. The signs and symptoms of Module corruption will also be explained.

The various principal functions and modes of Salvation HDD Doctor will be explored, as will their role in firmware diagnosis, repair and management.

PCB compatibility will be examined together with the carrying out of PCB ‘Hot Swaps’.

Management of various drive parametric data such as Head tables, passwords and defect lists will be detailed, together with an introduction to the ‘Selfscan’ function and its role in drive refurbishment.
