Specific hard drive failure symptoms on Hitachi 5K100 (HTS5410) series disks

Drive Families:

  • Hitachi 5K100 series (HTS541010G9AT00, HTS541080G9AT00, HTS541060G9AT00, HTS541040G9AT00, HTS541030G9AT00, HTS541020G9AT00, HTS541010G9SA00, HTS541080G9SA00, HTS541060G9SA00, HTS541040G9SA00, HTS541030G9SA00, HTS541020G9SA00)

Description of failure symptoms:

  • The hard drive will spin up as normal
  • No ticking noise is apparent
  • All will appear well, except the drive will not be recognised at all

Cause:

  • Physical bad sectors in the hard disk drives Service Area

Solution:

  • From Summer 2008 it has been possible to fully recover the data from these (previously unrecoverable) drives by bypassing their Service Area. Contact Data Clinic for further details.
