Recovering data from a flood damaged RAID server array

Severely flood damaged drives are putting Data Clinic’s Advanced Data Recovery Services to the test

Recent floods in the UK have caused many homes, businesses and public sector institutions to lose valuable data from their computer systems. Flood damage to a hard drive can contaminate the platters, corrode the internal infrastructure and destroy the circuitry; leaving the data indecipherable.

St James’ Primary School in Hull, was badly affected by the recent floods, their RAID, which contained extremely valuable school, pupil and teacher information was submerged in the soiled flood water. The flood water had penetrated three of the six drives to a severe extent and damaged the motherboard rendering it out of use. This case scenario leaves the data irretrievable.

Due to the excessive water damage, conventional data recovery methods are not applicable, as the drive will have sustained severe damage such that attempting a recovery using conventional methods will render the data unrecoverable. In these instances, use of Data Clinic's Advanced Data Recovery (ADR) service is appropriate as there are many critical phases in successfully recovering the data. Correct storage and handling of the media is very important as oxidisation of the hard disk will begin to occur. As a result of this, recovery is time consuming as components must be treated with extreme care.

The recovery process involves:

Fresh flow treatment and cleaning
Platter dismounting & surface treatment
Chemical drying in a controlled sealed environment
Platter surface re-lubrication
Mounting and recalibration

The data was completely recovered.

“We were extremely impressed with the recovery of the data on the RAID. St James Primary school contacted us, as their hard drive had been damaged by the flood; we were unable to recover the data, and thought that the probability of it being recovered was negligible. We chose to contact the Data Clinic. The team managed to completely restore all of the data. The turnaround time was remarkable, and the service provided was exceptional...resulting in full operations at the site within days"
