Advanced Data Recovery (ADR)
Data recovery from corroded PCB on laptop hard disk drive
Location: UK
Drive: Hitachi DK23EB
Outcome: The data recovery was successful
Background: This hard disk came to us with various
parts of the PCB severly corroded through exposure to a water based
liquid. Fortunately the HDA was still intact and corrosion free. The
drive was no longer powering up & the customer was unable to remember
when the incident occured. By inspecting the PCB, the amount of corrosion
suggested that oxidisation had been taking place for at least a couple
of weeks.
Recovery: With Hitachi DK23EB hard disks the firmware
microcode unique to the drive is stored on the PCB, therefore swapping
the PCB with an identical model was not an option. It was decided to
attempt recover using a deoxidiser to dissolve the corrosion, and then
electronically repair the damaged areas of the PCB. The work was carefully
undertaken over a period of 2 weeks & resulted in a full recovery
of the clients data.
Data Clinic can often recover data from drives that other companies
can not. Find out more about Data Clinic's Advanced Data Recovery services
